Life Is a Jumble

Life is a jumble of thises and that’s

(or “these” and “those,” if you insist)

Of cinnamon crumbles and baseballs and bats

It ebbs and it flows

It rises and falls

To the highest of highs

And the lowest of lows

Stuffed full with the corniest rhyming and rhythms

With splashes of horns and sparkling of cymbals

Tinkling of bells, explosive percussions

Music fills life in all its mutations

Moment by moment

The colors remain

Bright as the sun

Then gray as the rain

All of it is LIFE

LIFE in all-caps

From the first lullabye

To the sounding of taps

One bite at a time

Savored, enjoyed

The power of living

Of life

And of love

Huddled Masses

Crowds

Huddled Masses

Seething Swirling Stockpiles of Humanity

Surrounded by Kindred Strangers

We Are Many

We Are One

“I am you and you are me”

[ …to quote a mid-century poet-philosopher… ]

Everywhere I look there are people just like me

“all the world over so easy to see”

We know each other intimately while not knowing each other at all

Famous or unknown

We are who we are

And we are all human

The same five senses for most

And emotions and ambitions

And hopes and dreams

And expectations and limitations

We Are One

We Are The Crowds

We Are The Huddled Masses

Attribution to Emma Lazarus for the term "Huddled Masses"
from her poem "The New Colossus"
